Wordsworth/Wadsworth
Ralph Wordsworth of Water Hall, gent. born 1591. Died Aug. 14, 1603. Buried at Penistone. married Elizabeth, daughter & co-heir of Richard MICKLETHWAITE, of Swaithe hall, Darfield, Barnsley, gent. Died 1665, aged 68, buried Penistone.
John Wordsworth, of Swaithe Hall (1626-1690), had 5 children,
but it is not known by which of his wives he had Joshua, Mary
& Elizabeth
m. (1) Debora, daughter of Robert Hyde of Denton
m. (2) Sarah, daughter of William Spencer of Attercliffe, gent. married at Sheffield 1664
m. (3) Sarah, daughter of unknown, married at Penistone, 1665
m. (4) Mary, daughter of Sir Edward Rodes of Great Houghton. Died 1673, buried at Darfield
Mary Wordsworth (1632-1690) married Sheffield 1652 Sylvanus, son of William RICH
John's grandson, Josias Wordsworth of Water Hall (1627-1709) married 1656 Sarah, (1625-1691) daughter of George BEAUMONT, of the Oaks, Darton. Their son, John Wordsworth (1657-1709) of Water Hall, married 1685 at Penistone Ann, (1658-1711) daughter of William MILNER of Burton Grange John and Ann's children were born at Burton Grange:
- Josiah Wordsworth ( -1691) buried Darton m. ?
- Sarah Wordsworth (1685-1729) m. Robert Pierce , merchant of London
- Elizabeth Wordsworth 1694
Josiah Wordsworth's son Josiah was born 1719 and moved to London.
Josiah Wordsworth (1719-1780) Mincing Lane, London, merchant. Purchased estates at Wadworth, Yorks.and Sevenscore, Kent. Built the Cloth Hall at Penistone in 1763. married 1749 Anne (1721-1814) co-heiress of Arthur ROBINSON, Collector of Customs at Sunderland. She was buried at Wadworth.
Josiah and Anne had two daughters:
- Mary Wordsworth (1751-1817) buried Wadworth married 1771 Sir Charles Egleton KENT, Bart, of Fordham, Suffolk.
- Ann Wordsworth (1771-1855) married Wadworth 1770 Harry VERELST of Aston Hall, died in Boulogne, France 1785
Note: On the 23rd. May, 1826, Sir C.E.Kent, Mrs. Ann Verelst, & Henry Verelst, esq. conveyed the Manor of Penistone, Water Hall in Penistone, and Heeley Farm in Hoylandswaine, to F.W.T. Vernon Wentworth, esq. of Stainbro' Castle.
