Bolton-on-Dearne

Described in the 1820s as a parish-town, in the lower-division of Strafforth and Tickhill, liberty of Tickhill. It was situated 7½ miles north of Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley The population was 623. The Church a perpetual curacy, dedicated to St. Andrew, in the Deanery of Doncaster, value, £6 15s. 4d. Patrons, the Executors, of William Marsden, Esq.

Goldthorpe was described as a hamlet in the township and parish of Bolton upon Dearne.

The churchyard was once described as like a garden, kept as we should like to see all our churchyards. The church had a 15th century tower with windows of the 14th century.

Interesting fact

St Johns Church, Goldthorpe was the first concrete church, given by Lord Fairfax, it was in Italian Style, effective in the distance with its campanile crowned with a clock. The pulpit was carved with cherubs, foliage and figures of the Four Evangelists.
