At Domesday, Walter de Aincourt had a manor here, which he held with Wadescel under the King.
In 1253 a memorandum recorded in the Deans Chartulary, records that the Chapelry of Brampton belonged to the Parish Church of Chesterfield.
Brampton was a very extensive parish, comprising the townships of Cutthorpe, Ashgate, Hall Cliff, Holymoreside, Brampton Moore, New Brampton, Wadschelf (Watchell), and Wigley, Chander Hill, Lead Hill, Upper and Nether Loads, Somersall, Birley Grange, Broomfield, Hilltop, and Pratthall
