Part 6. The Revells of Nottinghamshire »

Algarthorpe

Eland Hall was in 1330, home of William de Eland, a Collector of Wool, who was the owner of the manor of Algarthorpe. The manor later passed to the Strelley, Hutchinson and Revell families.

Roland Revell married Mary Eland( b.abt 1492 Algathorpe). They had 2 sons Randall Revell and Hugh Revell.

Mary Eland, daughter of Thomas Eland, son of Henry , was aged 1 year and 1 month, when she was declared heir to the family property - the Algarthorpe and Peverel estates passed to the Revells on her marriage with Rowland Revell. Rowland Revell died 8th November, 1537.

In 1546, Hugh Revell, cousin and heir of the last of the Elands, obtained a licence from King Henry and sold the office or Bailiwick of the Honour of Peverel, with all profits, charges, and all records, evidence, court rolls, and writings concerning and belonging to the said office, to the Henry Willoughby, of Wollaton

Eland Hall & Algarthorpe

Held by the Morton's, the Lords of Wollaton, of whom, Adam, Robert, and Eustace, gave alms to the Cluniac monks of Lenton out of the estate held of them by Gerard de Algarthorpe, and his ancestors. The most notable of the owners of Algarthorpe William de Eland, the king's servant, (vdUuiesj, who lately had the custody of the castle of Nottingham, and Honour of Peveril in the counties of Nottingham and Derby, for life, and to whom this bailiwick of Algarthorpe was granted by Edward III., in the tenth year of his reign. His son William, held it in the 41st year of the reign of Edward III, who had previously into the neighbouring family of Strelley, his wife being Cecily, the daughter of Sampson, and co-heir with her brother Robert de Strelley.

Taking up their residence at Algarthorpe, the Elands bestowed upon it the name of Eland Hall. The third in succession of the family of Eland, named William, died in the eighth year of the reign of Henry III, leaving his son and heir, a fourth William, only about nine years of age Yet it appears that this William Eland died so early as the seventeenth year of the same reign, he left a son and heir of the tender age of twenty weeks and four days, in the tuition of Margaret his widow, mother of the infant.

In the 1494 an inquisition held at Nottingham shows that Henry Eland, brother to Thomas Eland, and of the age of 40 when he succeeded through his brother's death, died seized of the manor of Algarthorpe, holding it of Sir Henry Willoughby, as of his manor of Wollaton. Mary Eland, daughter of Thomas Eland, son of this Henry, was then aged 1 year and 1 month, and was declared heir to the property. It was she after the death of her husband Roland, the whole estates, including the Honor of Peveril, to Randall Revel 'because he had holpen her in her great suits she had with Nicholas Strelley, concerning her said inheritance' .

The Revells soon sold this ancient patrimony to the Hutchinsons who let the old hall fell into decay. Reference
