Rolleston of Maltby

In the Church of Warsop is a marble Mon. to the memory of John Rolleston of Rolleston, co. Staff., Secretary to Wm , Duke of Newcastle, leaving two children. He d. 18 Dec. 1681, aged 84. Erected by Eliz. his widow, then residing in that parish. This must, be the John Rolleston who wrote a Preface to the Duchess of Newcastle's ' Life of the Duke.' The widow was the 2nd wife of Sir Ralph Knight of Langold. As he is described of Rolleston in Staffordshire perhaps he may not belong to these. See his will in York Wills 1427. Geo. Pole of Heage, Esq., in his will 7 March 1673 speaks of his son in law Lancelot Rolleston, Esq., who had mar. Elizabeth his daughter. Who was Lionel Rolleston who mar. dau. of .... Copley of Batley, wid. of .... Bosvile of Gunthwaite and after a Cressy of Birkin ? See also Jane Rolleston of this family ; but they seem to be Rollestons of Tanshelf in Pontefract. Sylvester Rolleston, son in law of Tho. Frankish of Tickhill 1579. York Wills 183. Edward R., son in law of Gabriel, Anne of Cridling Park 1588, & Thos & Bridget his children. Anne another dau.& Edward R.'s wife named Mabel. Lionel another son of Edward & the youngest. Also Edw. & Elizab., children of Edw. Rolleston. See will of Gamaliel Rolleston 1630. York Wills 659. He makes his brother William Copley of Wadsworth Exr, Coz. Chris Copley & his wife, Coz. Godfrey Bosvile

Robert ROLLESTON (1747-1826) Aston On Trent, Dbys. s/o John/Dorothy m. 1772 Margaret THORNHILL, children:

George Rolleston (1791–1868), son of Robert and Margaret Rolleston, was a Church of England clergyman and squire who came to Maltby in 1816 and bought Maltby Hall from Sir William Bryan Cooke (A descendant of the Cooke's of Wheatley), in May 1826 for £5000. He married Anne Nettleship (d. 29th March, 1852), the daughter of a well-known Gainsborough family, in May, 1818. Children:

George snr established a school in Maltby in 1823.

George Rolleston (1829–1881), physician and physiologist, was born on 30 July 1829 at Maltby Hall, Rotherham. Educated initially by his father, he was able to read from Homer by the age of ten, when he entered Gainsborough grammar school. Two years later he moved to the collegiate school at Sheffield, and won an open scholarship to Pembroke College, Oxford. In 1846. He married, Grace, daughter of Dr John Davy and niece of Sir Humphrey Davy. Of their seven children, three sons, including Sir Humphry Davy Rolleston(1862–1944), became distinguished physicians. The family home in Oxford was at 15 New Inn Hall Street until 1868 when they moved to Park Grange, a house they had built in South Parks Road near the museum. George Rolleston died at his home in Oxford of kidney failure at the early age of fifty-one on 16 June 1881, soon after returning to England. He was buried in Holywell cemetery, Oxford. He was survived by his wife.

William Rolleston (1831–1903), was born at Maltby Hall, Yorkshire, on 19 September 1831. A farmer and politician, he settled in Rangitata, Canterbury, New Zealand. He married Elizabeth Mary Brittan in 1865 and they had 5 sons and 4 daughters.
