Fire at Roche Abbey
1834Incendiarism. - On Thursday last, about 6 o'clock, a fire was discovered in the stack-yard belonging to Mr. Clayton's farm, at Roche Abbey , but immediate assistance being procured, and the fire-engine kept at Firbeck being promptly on the spot, the flames were subdued after one stack only had been destroyed. Fortunately, the stack discovered was at the contrary side of the yard from which the wind came, otherwise there would not have been a possibility of saving the remainder of the stacks, 6 or 7 in number.
This act must have been committed by some vile incendiary, as there is no house near, or any other way to account for the fire; and Mr. Clayton, occupier of the farm, is a man universally respected in the neighbourhood.
