Dreadful Fire at Black Horse Inn

15th September, 1851

About 3 o clock on Sunday morning a fire was discovered in the Black Horse Inn, High Street, Rotherham, which had caused the death of the landlady, Mrs Hannah Nicholson and her grandchild aged 2 and a half.

As soon as one of the servants was aware of the danger, Isabella Revill leapt out of the window with the granddaughter in her arms. Both were hurt and the child died. Mrs. Nicholson, a feeble woman of 82 years ran down stairs with the intention of fleeing through the front door. After the fire was put out her body was found in a corner of the bar. Her grandson, Joseph Nicholson Kay was severely burnt in the fire, which started in the kitchen. Mrs. Nicholson, the landlady had resided in the house for about 60 years and was well known in Rotherham.
