Thurcroft Manor and Estates for sale

On the 16th July, 1833, the Thurcroft Estate for for sale by auction. The details in the Leeds Mercury:

In the West Riding of Yorkshire. - To be SOLD by AUCTION, at the Tontine Inn, in Sheffield, on Tuesday, the 16th day of July, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, by Mr. T. N. BARDWELL, all that desirable MANOR, or reputed Manor and Estate, called THURCROFT, situate in the parish of Laughton-en-le-Morthen, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, with the Mansion-house pleasure grounds, gardens, and offices, containing 773a. 1r. 21/2d., whereof above 600 acres are freehold and the remainder copyhold, subject to small annual rents and a fine certain of trifling amount on admission, divided into suitable farms, principally within a ring fence, and comprising several cottages at Brookhouse and Carr, within the above parish.

The mansion-house is situate on a gentle eminence, within half a mile of Laughton-en-le-Morthen, and is surrounded with full grown and highly ornamental timber, which extends along a terrace for nearly half a mile to the north, and is capable of being formed, at a moderate expence, into most delightful walks and pleasure grounds.

It is within three miles of the celebrated ruin of Roche Abbey, and in 10 miles from Doncaster, and 12 from Sheffield.

The lawn, gardens, fish ponds, and other appendages, are already formed on a scale calculated for the residence of a gentleman of fortune, and an opportunity is offered by the sale of this property of obtaining a most desirable residence in a genteel neighbourhood, by the investment of a comparatively small amount of capital.

There are valuable lime-stone quarries on the estate, and no doubt exists that beds of coal extend beneath the surface of the principal part of the freehold, which may be wrought without causing any inconvenience to the occupier of the mansion-house, and turned to considerable advantage. It will be offered in several lots.

The principal one consisting of the mansion-house, gardens, and pleasure grounds, and 197a. 1r. 9p. of freehold land immediately adjoining the same, as will appear by the plan and particulars, which may be had at the principal inns and public rooms at Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, Manchester and Leeds; of Messrs. Russel, solicitors, York: Messrs. Sergeant, Milne, and Sergeant, solicitors, Manchester: Messrs. Upton and Son, solicitors, Leeds: Mr. W. G. S. White, solicitor, 8, King's Bench-walk, Temple, and Mr. Stone, solicitor, 5, Castle-street, Holborn, London: Mr. Paul Bright, Land agent, Sheffield: Messrs.
