Notes re Woolhouse

The Woolhouse family were established in Rotherham from the fourteenth century and in Glapwell from the late fifteenth to the late seventeenth centuries. In 1684, Thomas Woolhouse's heiress Elizabeth married Samuel Hallowes son of Samuel of Norton.

The Hallowes family became prominent in the 17th century through the activities of Nathaniel Hallowes (1582-1661) probably son and heir of Thomas of Derby, an active Parliamentarian and Member of Parliament for Derby in the Short and Long Parliaments. Nathaniel Hallowes purchased substantial properties in Dethick, Muston (Leicestershire) Thornsett and Mugginton, but the family also maintained a connection with Norton and finally established itself in Glapwell after the marriage of Samuel with Elizabeth Woolhouse. Samuel succeeded to the Hallowes estate on his father's death and his wife Elizabeth came into possession of the Glapwell estate on the death of her father Thomas Woolhouse circa 1698, but with reversion to her son Thomas on her death. She died circa 1721.

Marriage settlement by lease and release from Samuel Hallowes of Norton esq. and his son and heir Samuel to John Morewood of Alfreton esq. and Robert Hatfield of Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) gent, in consideration of the intended marriage between Samuel the younger and Elizabeth only daughter of Thomas Woolhouse of Glapwell esq. and her marriage portion of £1,000, of the manor of Mugginton, ½ the impropriate rectory of Mugginton, 2/3 of Dethick manor, of Lea Mill and of 2 messuages in Lea; Thornsett Hall and named closes in Glossop and Hayfield, to hold to the uses of the Hallowes family and Samuel and Elizabeth's children, and to provide a jointure for Elizabeth, 26 and 27 Jan 1683/4

Pre-nuptial articles of agreement between Colonel James Chadwick of Nottingham and Thomas Woollhouse the elder, in consideration of James' and Elizabeth Woollhouse's intended marriage: James will stand seised of properties including the nether manor of Woodborough, the Cheife Tyle house, 2 tenements in Nottingham, lands in the sand Field, Cow Poole Close, and ½ the manor of Awgher and Spurr Royall, County Tyrone, Ireland, and Woollhouse agrees to convey the inheritance of lands in Hinging Hucknall already settled upon her to uses. 1658

The will of Thomas Woolhouse of Glapwell refers to property in Bolsover, specified household items including books and music, lands in Ault Hucknall and Scarcliff, son Thomas, daughters Elizabeth, Barbara and Sarah, James Chadwick (Elizabeth's husband), sons Anthony and Bartholomew; refers to Elizabeth's care of her father since his wife's death. Woolhouse died on 28th February, 1667.

In consideration of the marriage in 1566 between Simon Rayner of Darlton Nottinghamshire yeoman, and Isabel Woolhouse, bastard daughter of John Woolhouse, John granted them four messuages with appurtenances lying within the town and fields of Glapwell and Palterton, and in the several occupations of Thomas Awwode, Richard Cantrell, John Peace and Richard Renolde. This property is made over to Simon and Isabel and Isabel's lawful heirs by Simon. If there are no heirs, then the property reverts to John. At this time John Woolhouse was married to Margaret.

Simon and Isobel had 5 children, including 3 sons, Roger, Augustine and Thomas Rayner. Their daughter Katherine married Nicholas Harston,an upholsterer of Lincoln

 

An Anthony Woolhouse, haberdasher of London, was married to Millicent. They had Robert, heir, and Nicholas of Lincoln's Inn, Middlesex . Anthony died sometime between 1583 and 1588. Millicent died 14th March, 1605. Sarah the daughter of Anthony and Millicent was wife of George Smythes, Alderman of London, then the wife of Sir Arthur Savage.

 

Robert Woolhouse son and heir of Anthony and Millicent, had children including a son Thomas who resided in Blasford.

Bartholomew Woolhouse of Middlethorpe was granted land in Carlton-on-Trent in 1622.

William Woolhouse of Carlton-on-Trent, married Anne, daughter of John Sturtevant in 1659. Their daughter and heiress Sarah, married Pennel Hales, yeoman, of Haddington Lincolnshire.

A William Woolhouse and his wife Mary were living at Firbeck in 1676
