Anlaby

John Anlaby of Etton married Dorothy, daughter of John Anne of Frickley. Children:

Margaret died in 1579, James Washington died in 1580, aged 44; they were both buried at Adwick-on-Dearne. Their eldest son Richard Washington of Adwick married Mary, daughter of Thomas Wombwell of Wombwell.

William Anlaby (1552-1597), was the second son of John Anlaby of Etton, he attended Cambridge University receiving B.A. in 1571. He had been brought up in the protestant religion, an but while travelling abroad, he was introduced at Douay to Dr. Allen, who had established a seminary there. This meeting resulted in Anlaby's conversion and his reception into the college (1574). In 1577 he was ordained priest, and in the following year sent upon the English mission. His missionary labours were in his native county of York. After nearly twenty years' labour on the mission he was condemned as a seminary priest, and was execuited at York in July 1597.

 

In 1591 Thomas Anlaby of Etton, Gent, married Ursula Cock a Widow, from Etton.

Pedigree of Anlaby

Thomas Anlaby of Etton, married in 1601 to Sarah Cressy, (dau. of Gervase Cressy of Birkin) - his second wife. Thomas died in 1641. Children:

John Hotham married 5 times, his wives dowries increased his inherited estates: (1) Katherine, daughter of Sir John Rhodes of Barlborough, Derbyshire, 16 Feb. 1606–7; (2) Anne, daughter of Ralph Rokeby, secretary of the council of the north (m. 16 July 1614, d about 1624); (3) Frances, daughter of John Legard of Ganton, Yorkshire; (4) Catherine, daughter of Sir William Bamburgh of Howsham, Yorkshire, and widow of Sir Thomas Norcliffe, (d 22 Aug. 1634); (5) Sarah, daughter of Thomas Anlaby of Etton, Yorkshire (m. 7 May 1635)

 

Until 1656 the manor and estates of Kirk Ella were owned by John Anlaby who died in 1661.

John Anlaby of Etton, Yorkshire, (one of the judges named in the High Commission for the trial of Charles I.), M.P. for Beverley, married Susan Beckwith(1614-1645) daughter of Roger and Susannah Beckwith. Children:

After the death of Susan, John Anlaby married Dorothy Boynton, daughter of Sir Matthew Boynton, M.P. and High Sheriff of Yorkshire. Children:

Susanna Anlaby,(d.1715) married twice: first to Arnold Colwell, secondly, to Foot Onslow. They had a son Arthur.

Foot Onslow(d.1710) represented Guildford in three Parliaments, during the reign of William, III. and in the Convention Parliament of 1688. He was first Commissioner of the Board of Excise.

Arthur Onslow (1691-1768) the eldest son of Foot Onslow, Esq. and Susanna, was educated for the bar, and was appointed Recorder of Guildford, and returned to Parliament for that borough in the years 1719, and 1720. Text not available

In 1606 William Rawson of Sherburn-in-Elmet married Isabel Anlaby daur of Thomas A., Esq., of Etton.

In 1613 Rowland Watter Gent. married Ann Anlaby of Saxton. He was younger son of William Watter, Lord Mayor of York in 1620. He was baptized 26 Sept. 1596 and administration was granted 2 Nov. 1640, to Anne his widow. daughter of Thomas Anlaby, of Etton, by his first wife, Ursula, dau. of William Palmer

Francis Anlaby of Thorpe Basset married in 1614 to Elizabeth Hungate of Birdsall. He was aged 15. according to Visitations, p. 486. She was daughter of William Hungate, of Birdsall, by Mary Sotheby.

1618 John Trott of Scawby (Scalby) Doncaster married Ann Anlaby of Hutton Derwent.
