Cadeby Pit Disaster of 1912

Visit by the Archbishop of York

The Archbishop of York paid a visit to the villages of Denaby and Cadeby on the 10th, the day after the explosions. Almost everyone in the villages had someone to mourn, almost every other house had blinds drawn. Great crowds of people gathered in the area of the pit.

The Archbishop visited the homes of several of the bereaved, and also held a short service in the temporary mortuary at the mine.

In a brief address to the men who were assembled in the pit yard, he offered words of condolence and symmpathy and also took the opportunity to express his deep admiration for the men who risked their own lives to go down the pit and try to rescue their colleagues.

Also present was the Bishop of Sheffield and several of the local clergy. The Archbishop arranged to preach at Denaby Church the following Sunday, and suggested the funerals should take place on the Friday and he would conduct a service at All Saints Church, Denaby.
