Maltby Pit Disaster of 1923

Funeral of Reginald Renshaw

St. Bartholomews Church MaltbyThe funeral took place at Maltby on Wednesday 3rd August, 1923, of Reginald Renshaw, the only man whose body was recovered after the colliery explosion.

Great crowds assembled at the church and in the cemetery.

The Bishop of Sheffield officiated. Among those present were Lord Aberconway, Chairman of Directors; Sir Henry Norman, M.P., and other directors.

Funeral of Reg Renshaw Very little seems to have been recorded about Mr. Renshaw, who was referred to as O. Renshaw in some newspapers.

We found this extract from the 1881 census:

Living at 60 Westwood Row, Tankersley, Barnsley:

Albert Renshaw, age 28 born Elsecar, coal miner
Maria (H), wife, age 24 born Rotherham
Reginald age 6 born Masborough
Maria age 4 born Rotherham
Agnis age 3 born Masbro
Margaret age 9 months born Tankersley

This would make Reginald, 48 years of age in 1923. If it is the Reginald Renshaw who lost his life in 1923, this is another example of a mining family moving from one job to another.          continued »
