Swallow of Attercliffe Forge

Matthew Swallow, was son of Richard Swallow of Bull Cliffe, in the Parish of Sandall Magna. He married Elizabeth (Nee Armytage), daughter of John Armytage of Dodworth, Barnsley, yeoman in 1660. On his marriage to Elizabeth, the marriage settlement included Hollinhouse, in the Parish of High Hoyland, with all appurtenances.

Richard Swallow (1729-1801) who took over the Attercliffe Forge in 1775-1776, a few years after the death of John Fell, pioneered the processing of crucible steel at these works, and the steel business founded at this time ultimately passed into the hands of the Sanderson Company. John Sanderson, Esq, merchant occupying New Hall after the death of Richard Swallow (about 1838).

Wadsley Forge, Wardsend in Ecclesfield

Sir Ralph Howard, originally leased Wadsley Forge, to Richard Swallow:
Lease. Duke of Norfolk to Richard Swallow of Newhall The waterwork or forge called Wadsley Forge, with dams, etc. for 63 years. 1802.
Assignment of lease to Thomas Rawson, brewer, 1805.
Assignment by Hannah Rawson's executors to John Milnes and a number of others in equal shares and proportions as tenants in common. 1843.
Assignment by the survivors of the above tenants to William Henry Brown, iron and steel roller, previously of Storrs bridge works, now of Wardsend. 1850
Mortgages and subsequent assignment by Brown to Sir Ralph Howard. Further machinery having been installed and disputes having arisen the whole was listed in two schedules giving in great detail particulars of the machinery in the rolling mill, rod mill, etc. 1855.
