In 1679 Christiana Knight, daughter of Sir Ralph Knight of Langold, was married to Jonathan Staniforth of Firbeck.

In 1786 William Staniforth (1717-1786) bequeathed to Attercliffe Chapel : £50 to the chapel wardens and overseers of the poor to be at interest to keep a vault and two tombs in repair in the chapel-yard; the remainder of the interest to be divided amongst the poor of Attercliffe not assisted by poor rates, in sums of not less than 2s 6d. to each family.

Along with the family of Chappell, the Staniforth's were the principal freeholders of Darnall. Their residence here was built in 1723. Their pedigree shows that the family had been in Sheffield during the reign of Richard II.

After the death of Samuel Staniforth, who built the mansion at Darnall, it was for some time the residence of Henry Howard, father of the Duke of Norfolk. Edward Charles Howard, his youngest son was born here.
