Reresby of Thrybergh

Sir Thomas Reresby was the son of Thomas Reresby of Thrybergh in Yorkshire, Esq. by Cicely daughter of Richard, and sister and coheiress of John Gotham of Brinsworth. He was born about the year 1326. The greater part of his life was passed in military expeditions. Sir Thomas Reresby married Lucy daughter of John Sheffield, Esq. and by her had four sons: Thomas, Francis, Edmond, and James, and a daughter, Judith, who married Richard Symmes of Barnsley.

Sir Thomas Reresby, the eldest son, died in 1439, and was the ancestor of the family who entered their pedigree at the Visitation of Yorkshire in 1584.

Arnold Reresby of Rotherham, Esq. was probably a younger son of Sir Thomas Reresby of Thrybergh, who died in 1439. His will, dated 28 Nov. 1485, was proved at York on the 4th of January 1486.

He desires to be buried in the church of Thrybergh. He leaves 24 marks to a suitable priest who shall do service and pray specially for his soul, and for those of William Reresby his brother, and Isabella his sister, for the space of four years. To the making or glazing of a window in the Chapel of the Blessed Mary upon Rotherham Bridge, 6s. 8d. To Elizabeth, Margaret, and Alianor Reresby 6 marks each. To Thomas Reresby 20s. To Isabel Westby 10s. To Elizabeth Fitzwilliam 13s. 4d. To Arnold Wardrop, 13s. 4d. To Richard Reresby 13s. 4d. To Arnald Tak 6s. 8d. To the Abbot and Convent of Roche 13s.4d. To John Greenwood, Vicar of Rotherham, 10s. To John Treyton 20s. He appoints his cousin Ralph Reresby his executor.

Arnold Reresby died 2 Dec. 1485, and was buried in Thrybergh Church, where a monument was erected. His name was formerly recorded in one of the windows in Rotherham Church.

Sir Thomas Reresby, the father of Arnold, married Maud Bosvile of Chevet, he was buried near his wife in Thryhergh Church. His wife died in June, 1430. Sir Thomas made his will 7 Dec. 1431, which was not proved until April 28, 1439. He orders himself to be buried in the church of St. Leonard at Thrybergh, and he desires that a chaplain may be found to do service for his soul, as well as for that of Matilda his wife, with others. His sons Ralph and Arnold Reresby are his residuary legatees and executors, and his cousin Peter De la Pole is the supervisor of his will. His father, another Sir Thomas Reresby, died in 1394.

John Reresby was a leading Royalist in the Civil War, as were the majority of townspeople of South Yorkshire. When he died in 1646 he had debts of £1200, resulting from Cromwell's victory at Marston Moor in 1644, Thyrbergh Park had been stripped of timber and its deer removed.

Elizabeth Reresby (d. 1695), second daughter of Sir George Reresby and Elizabeth married:

Her nephew Sir John Reresby later claimed that she left Monson when his political influence began to wane, having sufficiently enriched herself by several jewels and a great part of his personal estate (Source: Memoirs of Sir John Reresby).
