Educated at Rotherham Grammar School and Cambridge University, he gained a major scholarship in modern languages at Gonville and Caius College. He married Kathleen Marjorie (b. 1910/11), a private secretary at the War Office, London, the daughter of John Milnes-Smith, They had a son and adopted a daughter

He attended Rotherham Grammar School and graduated BA in 1932, from Jesus College, Oxford. He died in 1976 at Buckinghamshire,
