History

In 1822, West Melton was in the township of Brampton Bierlow, and parish of Wath upon Dearne, upper-division of Strafforth and Tickhill, liberty of Tickhill; 5 miles N. of Rotherham, 6 from Barnsley, 11 from Doncaster.

In 1932, an explosion at nearby Cortonwood Colliery claimed the lives of 3 miners from West Melton.
